What would you do if you got fired? If you cannot answer that question confidently, quickly, and definitively, you may be in burnout.

What does fear of getting fired have to do with burnout, you ask? Everything.

One of the major contributing factors to burnout, especially for professionals in high risk high reward fields is becoming too attached to your identity as a professional. The Journal of Graduate Medical Education in 2018 determined that how a doctor sees him/herself is a major factor in their degree of burnout.

Another study out of the University of Pittsburgh in 2017 reported that neurologists self-identified “identity” as one of their top three sources of burnout.

It is critical that, as professionals, particularly those in high risk, high reward fields, we learn that who we are is much more than what we do for a living.

Once you understand and embrace your true identity, which is revealed through exploring your values, talents, and life experiences, you will no longer feel “trapped” by a particular job or even a career. Such a revelation is freeing and it is empowering. And this results in having a confident answer to the question posed here.
